Job Description
At Scrip/Pink Sheet, part of Citeline, we have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Reporter to be based in China to join our international editorial team and become part of an industry-leading pharma, medtech and consumer health intelligence business.
Our dedicated team of writers based in countries around the world collaborate around the clock to keep our subscribers up to date, not just on what’s happening in the pharma industry, but what it means for them. You’d be joining a title with a 50-year reputation for in-depth news and analysis and a wealth of journalistic experience, industry knowledge and high-level contacts.
We’re looking for someone with a passion for hunting down the ‘so what?’ of a story, who wants to uncover the angles that will matter to a specialized readership, and who relishes the opportunity to build in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the biotech and pharma industry.
Can you unearth the real story behind a company press release? Pick up the phone to business leaders, scientific experts and investment analysts and ask the questions that really matter? Complement your writing with compelling charts and graphs? Scour databases and speak to analyst colleagues to generate original content? Network and build contacts while turning around timely reports from a scientific or industry conference? Research and write a feature on an important area of pharmaceutical development? Develop new formats for presenting valuable information? Then we want to hear from you.
Join the China editorial team for Scrip/Pink Sheet and lead the news agenda reporting on and analysing developments in the global pharmaceutical industry.
Key duties and responsibilities
In a typical week you could:
- Write one story a day on issues such as
- Company deal making or financial updates
- Company leadership and strategy
- Pipeline progress for medicines in development
- Therapeutic area market intelligence
- Scientific conference coverage
- Interview company executives to augment your articles
- Develop a data-led infographic
- Research/write a feature length story
- Attend an international conference to report news, conduct interviews and build contacts
- Work with other members of the team in China and across APAC to plan editorial direction
Key requirements
We are looking for an experienced business journalist with knowledge of the pharmaceutical and biotech industries who is comfortable regularly meeting senior external contacts and writing engaging content to tight deadlines.
We also welcome applications from candidates who can convincingly demonstrate:
- Ability to write clearly, news writing skills, and keen judgment;
- Bilingual spoken and written Mandarin Chinese and English;
- Intellectual curiosity – ie: desire for knowledge, preparedness to ask and learn, and an authentic interest in other perspectives;
- Ability to extract key messages from complex information and communicate these effectively and succinctly (through written word/other formats);
- High attention to detail, with the ability to consistently deliver articles requiring minimal editing;
- Desire to experiment and innovate with new formats and approaches;
- Collaborative approach to working with colleagues across the business;
- Good interpersonal skills in event coverage settings and ability to gain the confidence and cooperation of sources;
- Flexibility to cope with challenging workloads and occasional unexpected scheduling;
- Ability to understand and interpret data;
- Computer literacy – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) – and capacity to learn custom editorial systems and infographic tools;
- Strategic use of social media;
- You should have a degree in journalism, sciences, languages or economics or equivalent career experience.
